Empty Bucket at Punta Del EsteAs this is the start of another new year I thought it was time to start making a list of things that I would like to achieve at some stage in my life. I may also include items that have crossed my mind at some stage that may be interesting or challenging, they might improve my life in some way or they may just be silly little things that appeal to me in some strange way.

To help get me started I am going to include some of the things that I have already achieved as well. This will give me the chance to cross a few things off straight away, which is always a nice feeling anyway. The other advantage to this is that the list is no longer virgin territory and so attempting the first item will not seem so daunting.

I was going to aim for 100 items but I expect this list to become a moving target with items added and crossed off as and when the opportunity arises so I am just going to start creating a list and see what happens…

Right then lets get on with the list making.

Random Ideas

Here are some crazy ideas in no particular order:

  • Stroke a lion
  • Jump out of a plane at 14,000ft (i.e. Sky dive)
  • Check out the view from the Empire State Building
  • Ride an elephant
  • See the Grand Canyon
  • Run a half marathon
  • Swim alongside a turtle
  • Get a University degree
  • Try white water rafting
  • Watch a wild grizzly bear fishing for salmon
  • Blow $100 in Las Vegas
  • Take a year off, backpacking
  • Jump off a bridge (i.e. Bungy jump)
  • Ride in a gondola in Venice
  • Go on safari in Africa
  • Watch a New Year fireworks display in Sydney
  • Climb an active volcano
  • Catch a shark
  • Learn to SCUBA dive
  • Fly in a helicopter
  • Watch a turtle crawl up a beach and lay its eggs
  • Dive/snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef
  • Watch the British Lions play rugby in South Africa
  • Visit Mount Rushmore (the cliff with American presidents heads on it)

Well that’s not a bad start. Amazingly I have already achieved all of these so I can cross them off my list straight away. I thought starting with some random things I have already done would help inspire me so here goes.

Let’s start small

Here is a list of some simple things that should be easily achieved without too much effort:

  • Watch deer rut on Exmoor
  • Get a portrait taken with my wife
  • See puffins on Lundy Island
  • Become an early riser

Reach for the stars

Now lets try for something a little bigger:

  • Learn to fly a plane
  • Take a trip into space
  • Take a trip in a submarine
  • Become a  millionaire

OK so most of that last bunch are probably never going to happen but that doesn’t matter, they are still things I would like to achieve if the opportunity ever arose.

Larger but hopefully doable

Next up something that will involve a bit of work to achieve but should be attainable:

  • Get a photo published
  • Start my own company
  • Set up a complete website from scratch
  • Get an iPhone app accepted into the store
  • Win a photography competition
  • Develop and release a web based application
  • Get some code accepted into an Open Source project

Wildlife events

I love watching wildlife so here are a few things I would like to see or do:

  • Watch baby turtles hatch and crawl down the beach to the sea
  • Swim with dolphins
  • Go on a multi-day safari
  • Watch a pod of killer whales

Another love of mine is travelling and there are still plenty of sights I would like to see:

  • Visit the Great Pyramids
  • Visit the Great Wall of China
  • Walk the South West Coast path
  • Visit Machu Picchu

Anything else

There are always some random ideas lurking in my head so lets let a few of them out:

  • Move to the country
  • Shoot a real gun
  • Own a bit of woodland or at least a big old tree
  • Photograph a kingfisher

To be continued

As I mentioned at the start of this item this list is hopefully going to grow. As I cross things off then, if I get a chance and the item warrants it, I will create a post and go into a bit of detail as to the how and why. Also if there are items to be added to the list then again I might create a post occasionally listing them with maybe some of the reasoning behind them, if there is any.

Anyway the actual list can be found on the new Bucket List page.
