Kindle with Books

Kindle with BooksWhy, oh why, do we need DRM! My first real run in with this copy protection scheme was with music. Then there are all of the issues surrounding films, including DVDs, Blu-Rays and now digital copies. Lately though the things that’s really bugging me are ebooks!

It’s getting really frustrating that this extra layer of complication seems to tacked onto everything. Not only does it restrict how you use the product that you have legitimately purchased but it also lowers the level of enjoyment you get out of a product.

Take DVDs for example. How many times have you had to sit through the copy protection lecture, that you can’t even skip past, at the start of every DVD? Just to rub salt in the wound, the people that don’t bother to actually part with their cash and just get a dodgy copy from a mate end up getting a better experience as they probably don’t have to sit through it!!!

Unfortunately ebooks are also currently encumbered with DRM, tying you in to the company you buy the book from. Take the Kindle for example. The only place you can buy ebooks for the Kindle is from Amazon. Or is it? Is this all about to change…

Large Red DamselflyThis is a sort of follow on article from Thoughts On Copyright. The first article goes into how copyright and licensing affects the freedom of use of any material that anyone produces.

This article is about the different types of content I may produce and my thoughts on how I should license my work. If you are thinking of creating any work of your own then the ideas raised in this post may be of benefit to you but make sure that any license you use aligns with your way of thinking before you commit to it.

Once I have defined what I want the license to achieve then I can get into the territory of finding a suitable license for each type of material that I may produce. From my point of view that will include everything from posts on my blog and any of my other websites, websites designed for other people, photos and other graphical images, any books I may write and software applications for both Windows and the Web—possibly even Linux, Mac, iPhone or even something else down the line.

Copyright is for losersMy recent experiences with music copyright, and how it seems to make everyones life that little bit harder, made me question what copyright is all about.

I decided to look around at how copyright works and how it is being used. Along the way I came across some interesting points that made me dig a little deeper.

I hope to soon be creating various types on material in the hope of earning a living. Before I get started I wanted to put some thought into how to license my content.

‘As I am not a big corporation how does copyright affect my work?’ That is the question that I asked myself.

Butterfly CaughtWhen I started this blog I planned on posting some differing length articles, trying to find a natural balance between the available time and length of posts. Once I started writing all my articles seem to reach a natural length of around 1000 words. That doesn’t mean I’m aiming for posts to reach that size, it just seems to happen.

This takes a little longer each week than I had originally planned. Last week I was getting close to missing my allocated posting slot. If that starts happening then I know that it will not be too long before I give up completely replacing this with something more important.

So I decided to do something about it. I found something else less important that I could cut back on. Hence the post about Information Overload.

The moral is keep going if at all possible. Even if you are travelling at a snails pace you will still get there in the end.

As I am a bit short of time this week I am just going to do a short post about the pictures I have been using on this site. As you may have noticed most of the images are not mine even though I am a keen amateur photographer.

SkydiveThis week I thought I would try something a bit different. I thought it might be nice to add a video…

So I picked something I have already done from my bucket list. Skydiving. Yes that’s me in the picture, I’m the one in the fetching green jumpsuit.

Uploading the video proved to bit a bit more complicated than I was expecting as well as giving me a few things I want to write about here.

Anyway I did this tandem skydive in Cairns while I was travelling around Australia back in 1999, about November I think. Hopefully you should be able to see the video below somewhere.
