On a recent trip to Jersey I got charged an extra £10.19 for Mobile Internet & Data. This confused me as I always check that I have Data Roaming turned off whenever I go abroad…

I checked my phone and the Data Roaming option was definitely turned off. So how did I manage to rack up the charge?

After a bit of digging I found numerous posts on the internet suggesting that Apple have changed the settings options available and there are now two options you have to turn off before you can be sure you do not incur any charges while abroad.

So I bet you want to know what you need to do to make sure you don’t end up with any surprises on your next bill…

Castle CottageThis year Shirley and I took a trip to Lundy Island to celebrate our Anniversary. We stayed in the wonderful Castle Cottage which has a picture window that overlooks the harbour.

I have always been fascinated with Puffins and was hoping to catch a glimpse of some and cross another item of the Bucket List. Unfortunately that was not to be but there was plenty to see and do and the trip was a great success. All except the boat journey across to the island which was pretty rough. Most of the passengers seemed to be hanging over the edge, me included, or have their face thrust into a paper bag…

One bonus was that I managed to spot a couple of dolphins while hanging over the side of the boat. Not sure what they were though. They seemed to be spotted dolphins rather than common dolphins but not sure if you actually get them in our waters?

The journey back was quite smooth though which was a relief. Anyway here is a collection of some photos we took while on the island.

Ski Pad App IconI have talked a lot about developing an app for the iPhone. It took me a bit longer than I had anticipated but today I can officially announce that my Ski Pad App has been accepted to the iTunes App Store and is now available to download. For Free!

If you have an iPhone then go get it and let me know what you think. Feel free to give it a 5-star rating if you feel so inclined as that can only help with getting it noticed 😉

In this post I’ll go into a bit of detail of what the app is all about so you’ll have a better idea of what you are looking at.

Flowering RockAt the start of the year I set myself a list of goals to try and achieve in 2011. As we have now passed the half way mark in the year I am going through my list and looking at the progress of each item.

This is a follow on post from Part 1 so you might want to read that one first. This post covers the remaining categories which are Self Improvement, Finances, Photography and Travel.

Overall I am very pleased with my progress so far. It really does help to have some goals to aim for. I wonder how many of these things I would have achieved it I had just pottered along aimlessly as I was doing before…

Pembrey 001Every year Shirley and I try and take the whole family away for a week. Last year we went down to Cornwall. This year we rented a huge cottage near Carmarthen in Wales.

The cottage was connected to the Three Rivers Hotel & Spa so we even had the use of their swimming pool, sauna and gym. This was a great little bonus even though the walk back up the hill afterwards was a bit of a killer…

The weather held out again and I think it’s fair to say we all had a great time…

Here are a handful of photos from the trip showing off some of the wonderful places close to where we were staying. I know this post is a bit late but what with the distraction of the Royal Wedding I didn’t want to rush things…

Lowepro Fastpack 250I have just been getting my camera stuff ready to take away on the next Family Holiday. Let’s hope the weather was as good as last year…

Anyway what struck me was just how perfect my camera backpack is for a trip like this. With all it’s little pockets and compartments it is great to stash all the little bits and pieces that may come in handy if the need arises.

So this led me to the idea that I should write a little review of my Lowepro Fastpack 250 Backpack.

The fact that I can get access to my digital SLR while on the move simply by sliding the bag off one shoulder, even with a hefty zoom lens attached, makes the bag amazingly useful. Then there is the added bonus that I can slip my laptop in the back when travelling to and from my destination.

Join the Travel Hacking CartelI have recently come across the idea of Travel Hacking. This is basically a way to get the most out of the free upgrades and free flights around the world available from the different airlines by collecting Frequent Flyer Miles.

I used to collect AirMiles many years ago as my credit card used to ward them to me just for using the card. I think I got a free flight or two to Europe over the years but nothing to write home about.

Then the credit card company stopped giving away the free miles and my AirMiles account just lapsed…

Recently I came across the Travel Hacking Cartel. This is a paid for membership site which provides information on how best to collect and use your miles with regular new deals being posted with some great opportunities.

Soaking Up The SunMy wife and I recently went on holiday to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. I thought I would take this opportunity to share with you some of the photos from the trip.

We booked our holiday to the Canary Islands from Alpharooms.com which turned out to have the cheapest on offer. We stayed at a place called Los Ficus in Costa Teguise.

We didn’t do too much sightseeing as this holiday was purely meant for rest and recuperation. I did manage to cross something off my Bucket List though which was great fun…

I have started experimenting with uploading my photos to Flickr so you should be able to click through and view larger versions if you want. Please let me know if you have any issues viewing the pictures.

There is even an option to view these photos as a slideshow. Just bear in mind this is new to me so there may well be a few teething problems…

Trevi Fountain SmallBack in July I did a post about Married Life. I mentioned that I had just got back from a trip to Rome for a few days with my lovely wife, to celebrate our Anniversary, and that I would post some photos of the trip.

Well it is now December and I have at last started editing the photos. I am by no means finished but I have selected a handful of the best ones and thought it about time I put them up for you all to see.

I am getting a bit behind with the editing of my photos. It has got to the stage where I am trying not to get my camera out until I have caught up with the photos already waiting to be edited…

I think I need to have another look at my workflow and look at ways of speeding it up a bit. At least that way I can catch up on the backlog quickly.

Anyway hope you enjoy the pics!

Vancouver From AboveAbout this time last year my wife and I were in Canada. When I first started this blog I had intended to write a sort of diary with a post for what we got up to. A whole year has passed and I never managed to get to it so instead I thought I would write a single post with the highlights of the trip.

We flew in to Vancouver, drove around Vancouver Island, then back to the mainland, through the mountains and eventually flew back from Calgary. Here is a Google Map to show the complete route of our trip, where we stayed and any points of interest.

Along the way we saw Grizzly and Black Bears, Humpback Whales, Bald Eagles and many other creatures all in the wild as well as taking trips on a helicopter, ski-lifts and gondolas, sea planes and boats of all differing sizes.

Anyway with all the pictures this post grown into a bit of a monster so lets get to it…
