Film Rolls Art Work @DeTour 2011I have been using my iMac for photo editing for quite a while now. As is my way, if I don’t have a set of rules laid down then I waste a lot of time fiddling with things trying to improve things. The idea is to try and work out the best way. In reality though, every time I open up Aperture I start reorganising rather than actually editing photos…

To stop this time wasting back when I used Windows I detailed my Windows photography workflow. This was very specific to the tools that I used at the time and so is not much use to me now.

It is high time I updated this and wrote up a new workflow so I can actually get down to processing the backlog of images. This time I want to make it more generic, based more around the general steps you should take, rather than tying it down to the current tools I am using. That way the workflow should stand the test of time even if the tools I use change…

I will cover the basic steps required to import, cull, rate, edit and organise your images. Hopefully there should be some useful tips for anyone trying to find a photo editing process that works for you…

PowerShot SX40 HS Lens Extended

PowerShot SX40 HS Lens ExtendedI was recently asked what I thought about bridge cameras. To be honest I hadn’t really heard much about them before but when shown what they could do I was amazed.

A few days later I was packing my camera backpack for a day out down to Snowdrop Valley. Having not been there before I wasn’t sure about which lenses I might need so I took all three of the lenses I currently own, a wide-angle zoom, a prime lens and a telephoto zoom. (You can see more details of the lenses I use on the new Gadgets page I have set up listing all my gear)

I did in fact use all three lenses but they make the bag quite heavy and the constant switching of lenses is really starting to bug me. Sometimes I end up taking all three lenses and only using one of them…

As they were fresh in my mind this got me thinking about bridge cameras. Should I replace my dated DSLR with a bridge camera?

Castle CottageThis year Shirley and I took a trip to Lundy Island to celebrate our Anniversary. We stayed in the wonderful Castle Cottage which has a picture window that overlooks the harbour.

I have always been fascinated with Puffins and was hoping to catch a glimpse of some and cross another item of the Bucket List. Unfortunately that was not to be but there was plenty to see and do and the trip was a great success. All except the boat journey across to the island which was pretty rough. Most of the passengers seemed to be hanging over the edge, me included, or have their face thrust into a paper bag…

One bonus was that I managed to spot a couple of dolphins while hanging over the side of the boat. Not sure what they were though. They seemed to be spotted dolphins rather than common dolphins but not sure if you actually get them in our waters?

The journey back was quite smooth though which was a relief. Anyway here is a collection of some photos we took while on the island.

My wife was fortunate enough to win 2 tickets to this years Chelsea Flower Show. Neither of us has ever been before so we were not really sure what to expect. The weather was perfect on the day we went which made the whole thing a pretty amazing experience.

As we got the tickets at the last minute we decided to get the coach up to London. This cost under £40 for both of us with Berrys London Superfast service. We did look at getting the train but at short notice the tickets were closer to £200 which I find utterly ridiculous. How can they charge so much for a day return?

Anyway let’s get back to the flower show. As we were on foot we decided to pack light so I didn’t take my camera. Instead Shirley took our little IXUS which we shared, taking it in turns to snap away at the spectacular displays. To be honest the majority of these photos were taken by her…

Pembrey 001Every year Shirley and I try and take the whole family away for a week. Last year we went down to Cornwall. This year we rented a huge cottage near Carmarthen in Wales.

The cottage was connected to the Three Rivers Hotel & Spa so we even had the use of their swimming pool, sauna and gym. This was a great little bonus even though the walk back up the hill afterwards was a bit of a killer…

The weather held out again and I think it’s fair to say we all had a great time…

Here are a handful of photos from the trip showing off some of the wonderful places close to where we were staying. I know this post is a bit late but what with the distraction of the Royal Wedding I didn’t want to rush things…

Lowepro Fastpack 250I have just been getting my camera stuff ready to take away on the next Family Holiday. Let’s hope the weather was as good as last year…

Anyway what struck me was just how perfect my camera backpack is for a trip like this. With all it’s little pockets and compartments it is great to stash all the little bits and pieces that may come in handy if the need arises.

So this led me to the idea that I should write a little review of my Lowepro Fastpack 250 Backpack.

The fact that I can get access to my digital SLR while on the move simply by sliding the bag off one shoulder, even with a hefty zoom lens attached, makes the bag amazingly useful. Then there is the added bonus that I can slip my laptop in the back when travelling to and from my destination.

Riverbed No Longer DryLast week I put up some photos from our recent trip to Lanzarote. I decided to leave out the fact that it rained for a lot of the holiday!

Don’t get me wrong there were some clear spells but there was also a lot of rain. Today’s post is going to show the other side of our holiday…

I don’t mind the occasional rain shower but some of the rain was quite heavy. Lucky I had my waterproof coat really and it was required a few times…

Supposedly it was some of the heaviest rain they have had in 15 years!

It was still a lot warmer than back in good old Blighty though…

Soaking Up The SunMy wife and I recently went on holiday to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. I thought I would take this opportunity to share with you some of the photos from the trip.

We booked our holiday to the Canary Islands from Alpharooms.com which turned out to have the cheapest on offer. We stayed at a place called Los Ficus in Costa Teguise.

We didn’t do too much sightseeing as this holiday was purely meant for rest and recuperation. I did manage to cross something off my Bucket List though which was great fun…

I have started experimenting with uploading my photos to Flickr so you should be able to click through and view larger versions if you want. Please let me know if you have any issues viewing the pictures.

There is even an option to view these photos as a slideshow. Just bear in mind this is new to me so there may well be a few teething problems…

Sunset PhotographyI can have real difficulty making some of the most simple decisions…

When out and about and I come across an amazing site I can take a while deciding whether I should try and photograph the subject or get the video camera out instead. Hopefully the subject is still around when I have finally made my decision!

I like both mediums but for completely different reasons. I think video makes it much easier to capture an event, especially if it involves some kind of action. Sometimes though a great photo is worth hours of average video recordings…

Luckily I can make my decision before I venture out by only taking my DSLR or my video camera. But for how much longer is this going to be the case…

Trevi Fountain SmallBack in July I did a post about Married Life. I mentioned that I had just got back from a trip to Rome for a few days with my lovely wife, to celebrate our Anniversary, and that I would post some photos of the trip.

Well it is now December and I have at last started editing the photos. I am by no means finished but I have selected a handful of the best ones and thought it about time I put them up for you all to see.

I am getting a bit behind with the editing of my photos. It has got to the stage where I am trying not to get my camera out until I have caught up with the photos already waiting to be edited…

I think I need to have another look at my workflow and look at ways of speeding it up a bit. At least that way I can catch up on the backlog quickly.

Anyway hope you enjoy the pics!
